Booker Prize announced

October 18, 2011

And the winner of this year’s Man Booker Prize is… (drum roll) Julian Barnes for The Sense of an Ending.  The Booker Prize has not always been an indicator of popularity among our customers (in fact, I’ve been heard to say it’s the kiss of death for circulation) but this year’s winner proves me wrong.  We have a hold queue building on this title and our copies are being processed for circulation.

The Man Booker Prize is awarded to the best novel of the year written by a citizen of the Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland.  This year’s nominees included The Sisters Brothers, by Patrick deWitt, a Canadian citizen living in Portland.  I recently heard this book-talked and it sounds wonderful.  All of our copies are out, again proving me wrong.

Jeanne Crisp weighs in with more info on the machinations of the Booker Prize. Copy and paste into your browser to read this tidbit from NPR: http://www.npr.org/blogs/monkeysee/2011/10/18/141463492/report-from-england-happy-ending-to-man-booker-prize-controversies?sc=emaf

It’s too bad The Sisters Brothers wasn’t selected. That would have been a bold departure and truly interesting choice. At least they are trying to steer the award to books that are really read and not just admired, as the NPR article mentions.

Nancy, you are never wrong. Misguided, perhaps, but never wrong…
