Swedish Poet Wins Nobel Prize for Literature

The literature award this year goes to Tomas Tranströmer.  According to the prize’s website summary, it is

because, through his condensed, translucent images, he gives us fresh access to reality

 Sno-Isle owns a collection of his called New Collected Poems.

 Can you remember the last time an American won this award? It was Toni Morrison in 1993.  The situation prompts Salon’s Alexander Nazaryan to argue that that is precisely because American novelists haven’t really deserved it.  His points are based on literary merit but could touch on a patriotic nerve.   Still, one good thing about being passed over is American readers get to discover some other voices in literature to whom we might not pay as much attention otherwise.
