Serials and standing orders survey

August 1, 2011

Darren and I have standing orders of items we regularly purchase like travel guides, test books and almanacs. Most are published annually or biennially.

We now can put standing order items onto a serial record.  This allows all of the items for that title to be on one record instead of a record for each edition. One of the benefits is that we can automatically withdraw older editions.  Darren and I would like to keep the current and prior editions but pull any editions older than that.

I love the idea doing this with things like test books and almanacs.

I have questions about two types of books.  Do we want to keep than longer than the last two editions  of:

Chiltons – annual multi-volume sets that cover all of the major cars

Best American ….  Food writing, travel, etc.?

Here is the current adult standing order that is not travel.

I’d love to hear what you think.

A nice list – i did not even know that we had the witches spell a day almanac! It might be helpful to keep longer runs (beyond penultimate) of Chilton’s, Guinness, Pen/O’Henry, People Yearbook, Pushcart and Scott Standard. I don’t have strong feelings about Best American…. MC
