an award that Franzen didn’t win…

November 29, 2010

and didn’t want to win – the 2010 Bad Sex in Fiction Award goes to Rowan Somerville for “The Shape of Her.”  judges were apparently impressed with a comparison of lovemaking to “a lepidopterist mounting a tough-skinned insect.”  i don’t even know what that means and i certainly don’t want to google it!  says Somerville on the award,

“there is nothing more English than bad sex.”

Franzen’s “Freedom” was shortlisted.

posting by marin who would like to emphasize that “The Shape of Her” is UK edition only 2010 so please refrain from placing RINCs

I’m not going to try and figure out what it means, either, but having taken an entomolgy class, my gut instinct is that I can’t see this in any way as being a pleasant experience. I am wondering how much he played with that sentence until it was finally spot-on.
(Thanks much for posting, Marin! It’s always good to start the day with a laugh.)

Isn’t a lepidopterist a butterfly collector? And ‘mounting’ in this sense involves pinning a specimen onto a display, so the image isn’t quite as grotesque as the first impression would suggest — but it’s still bad.
