National Book Awards announced

November 18, 2010

We in Collection Development are all a little nonplussed over this year’s NBA’s.  The prize for adult fiction went to Jaimy Gordon for Lord of Misrule (on order, 4 holds pending).  The nonfiction prize went to Patti Smith for Just Kids, her memoir of life with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe in and around the Chelsea Hotel in the ’60’s (sorry, even this Patti Smith fan just couldn’t get into this one).  The poetry prize went to Terrance Hayes for Lighthead, which we don’t own (will submit an order to Acquisitions today).  Finally, the winner for children’s literature is Mockingbird, by Katherine Erskine (as of this morning, 5 of our 8 copies are on the shelf).

  1. David Says:

As someone who really isn’t a fan of Patti Smith, I was surprised how much I liked “Just Kids”, though the long ‘starving artist’ patch grew tiresome.

  2. Terry Says:

And as someone who tolerates Patti Smith and is intrigued by Robert Mapplethorpe, I was so ready not to like this one. Instead I found it a delightful read.
