Steve Martin, a man of many talents

November 17, 2010

Martin’s latest novel is “An Object of Beauty” which reveals the world of contemporary art  in New York City through the eyes of Daniel Franks, an arts journalist, and his ex-obsession, Lacey Yeager, a young and ambitious art dealer.  Martin collects art and has for years.

in an interview with PW, Martin explains the impetus behind the book:

I wanted to write about two things: the art world, and this character. And conveniently they came together. I did very little research except in my own brain. I did research the contemporary art world and interviewed some gallery owners. It’s a mystery to me the way that contemporary art galleries function.

reviews are mixed, though generally positive – EW graded it at an A-. the Kirkus review states:

In his latest novel, Martin (Born Standing Up, 2007, etc.) unveils an ambitious and heartfelt analysis of both the complexity and absurdity of the Manhattan art market.
