family, it’s complicated

September 29, 2010

in Matt Burgess’s debut, “Dogfight, A Love Story,” Alfredo, a drug dealer in Queens, plans to welcome home his brother from prison with a dogfight and some Ecstasy.  problem is, Alfredo might or might not have been involved in his brother’s imprisonment and is in love with his brother’s girlfriend, Isabel, who is pregnant with Alfredo’s child.  oops.

Shelf Awareness featured “Dogfight, A Love Story” earlier this week in its Shelf Starter: Opening lines from a book we want to read. Booklist and LJ gave it both positive reviews and PW a starred review.  the LJ review says

Burgess’s energetic writing propels his characters through a momentous weekend in this original and complex story. Alfredo is a fresh and lovable voice, perfectly complemented by Isabel. Together they bring a sweetness to a hard tale.

mentioned in the reviews are comparisons to Richard Price, Junot Díaz, and Jonathan Lethem (the last 2 courtesy of the publisher).
