“Super Sad True Love Story”

June 30, 2010

i wonder what it’s about….  Gary Shteyngart who wrote “The Russian Debutante’s Handbook” and “Absurdistan” brings us his latest, “Super Sad True Love Story,” due out 7/27/2010.  it received starred reviews from both Booklist and PW.  from the PW review (link to Powell’s for review text):

Shteyngart (Absurdistan) presents another profane and dizzying satire, a dystopic vision of the future as convincing and, in its way, as frightening as Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. It’s also a pointedly old-fashioned May-December love story, complete with references to Chekhov and Tolstoy.

the Booklist starred review (link to Amazon for review blurb) ends with:

Full-tilt and fulminating satirist Shteyngart (Absurdistan, 2006) is mordant, gleeful, and embracive as he funnels today’s follies and atrocities into a devilishly hilarious, soul-shriveling, and all-too plausible vision of a ruthless and crass digital dystopia in which techno-addled humans are still humbled by love and death.

errr, i am not even sure what that means.  regardless, “Super Sad True Love Story” was also picked as a standout at BEA’s “Shout ‘n’ Share” program.

Why is that everything marked “true” or “based on a true story” is suddenly so much more marketable? Mary C-OAK

I hope the story’s writing is better than the cover’s artwork…there seems to be no connection to a love story, unless it centers on people who met whilst playing Twister.

odd cover that seems totally irrelevant, but is certainly colorful.
