Film Movement movies available for download

March 26, 2010

Award winning independent and foreign films from Film Movement are now available for Sno-Isle customers as downloads.  Sno-Isle has been supplying these as DVD for years and they’ve been very popular, but earlier this month OverDrive began releasing titles as well.  The selection is a bit slim right now–there are only 6 titles.  Let’s hope more will be forthcoming.

I’ve also ordered additional DVD copies of some of these films as required.

The Drummer (Chinese with English subtitles) ACTION

Sid, the rebellious son of a controlling and savage mafia boss in Hong Kong, has to flee to the beautiful mountains of Taiwan upon enraging his father’s violent adversary by seducing his teenage mistress. Hiding out in the mountains, Sid encounters a group of Zen drummers whose mesmerizing art, rigorous physical training and austere way of life pique this hostile urban young man’s interest and he requests to join the group. Although Sid despises his father, he is turning out to be a younger version of him: wild and defiant. Immersed in the world of the Zen drummers, Sid eventually changes into a firm and focused young man. His independence from the mafia life and his father is profoundly challenged, however, when a twist of fate awaits him back home in Hong Kong and forces him to choose between loyalty to his family and his new found faith in himself. Chinese with English subtitles. Official Selection – Sundance, Seattle and Palm Springs Int’l FFs.

Familia (French with English subtitles) DRAMA

Michele, a divorced aerobics instructor with a gambling addiction, loses her job and seeks refuge with a childhood friend, Janine, who lives in a seemingly comfortable middle-class suburban neighborhood. Michele’s rebellious teenage daughter, Marguerite, and Janine’s shy and reserved daughter, Gabrielle, become friends and soon Marguerite has introduced Gabrielle to a world of promiscuity and vice. Familia explores the mother/daughter dynamic and how character traits are passed on between generations: is it possible to avoid passing on to our children those traits that we despise in ourselves? Canada. In French with English subtitles. Winner – Best Canadian First Feature at the Toronto Int’l Film Festival.

Gigante (Spanish with English subtitles) DRAMA

Jara is a shy and lonely 35-year-old security guard at a supermarket on the outskirts of Montevideo. He works the night shift, monitoring the surveillance cameras of the entire building. One night Jara discovers Julia, a 25-year-old cleaning woman, through one of the cameras and is immediately attracted to her. Night after night, he watches her on the cameras while she works. Soon he starts following her after work: to the cinema, the beach and even to a date with another man. Jara’s life becomes a series of routines and rituals around Julia, but eventually he finds himself at a crossroad and must decide whether to give up his obsession or confront it. Uruguay. Spanish with English subtitles. Winner – Best First Feature, Grand Jury Prize Silver Bear – Berlin Int’l Film Festival. Official Selection – Toronto, Telluride and San Sebastian Int’l FFs.

The Great Match (Mongolian with English subtitles) COMEDY

The Great Match tells the adventurous story of three devoted soccer fans, none of whom have ever met, but who nevertheless have two things in common: firstly, they all live in the farthest-flung corners of the planet and, secondly, they are all determined to watch the television broadcast of the 2002 World Cup final between Germany and Brazil. The protagonists in this epic adventure are a family of Mongolian nomads, a camel caravan of Tuareg in the Sahara, and a group of Indios in the Amazon. All living about 500 kilometers away from the next town, and the next television, their task remains a particularly daunting one. Spain-Germany. Kazajo Dialect (Mongolia), Tamashek (Niger) and Tupi (Brazil) with English subtitles. Official Selection – Berlin, Karlovy Vary and Seattle Int’l FFs.

Accompanied by Claire, a friend from Paris whom he has a secret crush on, Antoine gradually warms up to his experience in the country and his encounters with the villagers, who initially seem stubborn and gruff, but ultimately prove to be funny and endearing. This surprise French box-office hit is about the coming-of-age of a man re-discovering life and love in the countryside. France. French with English subtitles. His quest will bring him to Don Heber, an old paranoid mechanic whose only companion is Sica, his almost human boxer dog; to Lucía, a young mother who is convinced that her real place in life is as a lead singer in a punk band, and to “The One who Knows,” a teenage mechanic obsessed with martial arts and Kung Fu philosophy. The absurd and bewildering worlds of these characters drag Juan into a one day journey in which he will come to accept what he was escaping from in the first place—an event both as natural and inexplicable as a loved one’s death.
