February 18, 2010

with sustainability in mind and functioning as both seating and shelving, Gail Peter Borden, an architect and a professor at the University of Southern California School of Architecture, designed these chairs.  each chair can hold 200 books or 400 if all paperbacks.  more info at Book Patrol.  the price? $750.

    Doesn’t look real comfortable, though.

actually, the seat is slanted towards the back which would be nice (according to the site that sells ’em, that angle is adjustable). add cushions and voila.

i’m not convinced. imagine happy customer joe mocha sitting there sipping his scalding hot double tall skinny blah, blah, blah when who should come along but clueless customer big bag bob who slams his backpack down on the shelf top behind joe’s head startling joe who now has a lapfull of scalding hot white foam.

I think it might be a little bit awkward in a public library, cos you just *know* you’d wind up having some random person trying to browse your chair while you were sitting there… Throw in some cushions, though, and it’s a cool idea for someone living in a small space.
