More on book cover art

January 26, 2010

School Library Journal posted in Little, Brown in a Sticky Situation Over Book Covers that the publisher is changing the cover art for all three books of the Mysterious Benedict Society books.

The novels are about four gifted kids who come together to solve a series of challenging tasks.   The character of Sticky Washington is described as having “light brown skin” and the inside illustrations reflect this, but on all of the covers he appears fair-skinned.   I briefly commented on this story last week in New cover for Magic Under Glass.  Calls of “whitewashing” have ensued.

“We are adjusting the covers of all three titles immediately as they reprint in order to offer a more faithful rendering as soon as possible,” Melanie Chang, Little, Brown’s executive director of publicity and communications, told School Library Journal.
