Heroes of the Valley

January 8, 2010

A hobbit, a dwarf, and an elf walk into a bar and the dwarf orders some ale…

It’s been quite a while since I’ve read a heroic quest novel, I got my fill of them sometime between the Shannara books by Terry Brooks and the Lord of the Rings.  For years I just couldn’t read anything at all similar to them.   But over the holidays I read Heroes of the Valley by Jonathan Stroud.  This isn’t your typical heroic quest novel first of all Halli Sveinsson is far from your typical hero, he’s more a practical joker/slacker/dreamer than anything else.  Halli’s quest begins after one of his practical joke (hilarious by the way) goes horribly wrong.

There are several copies on the shelves currently.

Heroes of the Valley by Jonathan Stroud  received starred reviews from Booklist, School Library Journal, and Publishers Weekly.

Stroud is the author of the awesome Bartimaeus Trilogy.

posting by jim — and no I don’t have an ending for the joke that starts this post.

We used to refer to similar books as Sorta Shannara.
