this is news in nerd circles…

January 7, 2010

but i haven’t seen it make the news yet in the publishing world:  in mid December, the DRM for Kindle for PC was hacked meaning that Kindle editions downloaded to one’s PC can be stripped of the DRM and then read on other devices.  this is big and demonstrates the futility of DRM.

The resulting crack is a piece of software called unswindle, which was written by the latter [latter meaning i♥cabbages] hacker and is available here. It relies on reverse engineering from a hacker called darkreverser to discover the encryption algorithm used by the universal Mobipocket reader and most Kindle books.

Once unswindle is installed, proprietary Amazon ebooks can be converted into the open Mobi format. And from there, you can enjoy the content any way you like.

if there’s a will, there’s a way.

I’ve never visited a reverse engineering blog, nor ever thought I’d want to, but this one looked very interesting and surprise, surprise it’s readable!
