another exclusive deal that stinks

December 15, 2009

The New York Times is reporting that Stephen R. Covey has signed an exclusive e-book deal with Amazon for two of his best known works. For the next year the e-book editions of “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” and “Principle Centered Leadership” will only be available as a kindle e-book.

“Ho-hum so what  it’s just an e-book” you say.

This exclusive deal is sure to make Mr. Covey and Amazon a lot of money, but for you and me this deal stinks.  Amazon maker of the kindle sells their e-books through the kindle store on their website.  This is fine for everyone who owns a kindle and wants to read Mr. Covey.

However those people who own a Sony reader, or a Barnes and Noble nook will be left out in the cold by this deal, because kindle e-books work with the kindle, and that’s it.

This exclusive deal is different from the kind of exclusive deals that musicians (AC/DC, Rolling Stones, Garth Brooks) sign with big box stores like Wal-Mart and Best Buy.  With those deals I might not like being forced to shop there by theartist, but at least I can be sure that it work on my CD player when I bring it home and no one is forcing me to buy a piece of  equipment to enjoy it on.
