National Book Awards announced
November 15, 2012
In a gala event last evening, the National Book Award winners were honored. Louise Erdrich won the fiction award for her novel The Round House and Katherine Boo won the nonfiction award for Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity. In addition, Elmore Leonard was feted with the award for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.
The National Book Foundation has been criticized of late for honoring works by lesser-known authors, appearing to be out of touch with mainstream popular literature in America. This year’s nominees featured more well-known authors nominated in both the adult fiction and nonfiction categories. In addition, the award to Leonard was only the second time it was presented to a popular author instead of a critically-acclaimed master. I hope the focus on popular works will encourage our customers to explore all the nominees.
A full list of winners, and more detail on the event, can be found in this morning’s New York Times.
