it’s only blood

LC may be distantly related to Joseph Conrad,* but in comparing the literary prowess of the 2, it’s clear that the relation does not extend to writing ability.  take this tongue-in-cheek quiz to see if you can identify the classic lines from “Heart of Darkness” versus those from “L. A. Candy.”  my favorite, question 5:

A.Then he got fever, and had to be carried in a hammock slung under a pole.

B.“They’ve installed a stripper pole in our living room.”

i wonder who wrote what….  at least “L. A. Candy” is not pretending to be anything than what it is which i reluctantly respect.

*  seriously, is this true?  i can’t verify this fact other than the brief mention in this quiz, but perhaps i am a bad librarian.

Espresso Book Machine

July 1, 2009 · 1 Comment

The Northshire Bookstore,  in Manchester Center, Vermont is the first independent book store to install an Espresso Book Machine in the store.  The print-on-demand machine is called “Lurch” by the employees and is the size of a meat freezer.

The machine is made by On Demand Books and it might be the future of publishing.  The major publishers are waiting to see how things go before they make their catalogs available for printing.

Meanwhile, Northshire discovered that the machine’s ability to print original books in very small numbers was attracting a lively customer base of local authors. “Self-publishing was a plus we didn’t expect,’’ said Annette Rodefeld, Northshire’s print-on-demand coordinator.

Northshire provides various editorial and design services for a fee.
