If you were to ring in on Jeopardy, the correct answer to this question would be three things Jim’s read lately.
Death first
Sandman Slim a Novel by Richard Kadrey
I picked up this ARC (advance reader copy) and could not put it down. It’s up for grabs to anyone who wants a good fast read and leaves a comment. Sandman Slim won’t be published until late July 2009, but I’ve got a feeling it’s going to be popular.
I left the book at home today, but here’s the blurb courtesy of Amazon.
When he was 19, James Stark was considered to be one of the greatest natural magicians, a reputation that got him demon-snatched and sent downtown – to Hell – where he survived as a gladiator, a sideshow freak entertaining Satan’s fallen angels. That was 11 years ago. Now, the hitman who goes only by Stark has escaped and is back in L.A. Armed with a fortune-telling coin, a black bone knife, and an infernal key, Stark is determined to destroy the magic circle – led by the conniving and powerful Mason Faim – that stole his life.
Though nearly everything has changed, one constant remains: his friend Vidocq, a 200-year-old Frenchman who has been keeping vigil for the young magician’s return. But when Stark’s first stop saddles him with an abusive talking head that belongs to the first of the circle, a sleazy video store owner named Kasabian, Stark discovers that the road to absolution and revenge is much longer than he counted on, and both Heaven and Hell have their own ideas for his future. . . .
Love
Agnes & the Hitman by Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer
Yeah, yeah, I know it’s romance, and yeah I know guy’s don’t yada, yada, yada but Jennifer Crusie is awesome, and this is a great fun read. A & the H is the story of Agnes a woman who while wielding a frying pan can either whip up a mean pecan pancake or whup you upside the head with it, (the frying pan not the pancake) if you betray her. It’s also the story of Shane a NSA hitman for the government. There’s love, bullets, exploding boats, crazed mother in laws, mob bosses, a wedding that may or may not ever happen, and five million dollars of mob money. I highly recommend Agnes & the Hitman.
High geekery
How to do everything : Facebook applications by Jesse Feiler
The title says it all, and if this isn’t geeky enough for you I just finished Twitter power by Joel Comm. Both are excellent if you want to get your geek on.
