‘nother random 100 list

May 8, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Dick Meyer of NPR has jointed the ranks of those attempting to compile the top 100 must reads of all time, mostly fiction.  Meyer admits “I have wanted to write this column for a long time but didn’t have the chutzpah.  But I can’t resist.”  the list is in no particular order and is definitely a reflection of Meyer’s personal reading bias of “medium-brow, male and parochial.”  titles range from “Charlotte’s Web” (#46) to “The Jungle” (#28).

May 8, 2009 · 1 Comment

Shelf Awareness checked in with John Scieszka yesterday who is half-way through his term as the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature in which he hopes to stimulate reading.  the always funny Scieszka described his meeting with the former President Bush and Laura where Scieszka presented a signed a copy of his autobiography, “Knucklehead,” inscribed “To Laura and George, my two favorite knuckleheads.”  understandably, Scieszka waited till after dinner to hand over the gift.  read the full interview here.

Fiction at the Camano Island Pilot Project Library

Fiction at the Camano Island Pilot Project Library

David Menard, Debby Colfer and Becky Buckingham of Sno-Isle Libraries spoke to librarians around the state on Tuesday about bookstore marketing techniques in public libraries.  The presentation was part of the Washington State Library’s First Tuesdays program.  The program is archived here.

David Menard, Branch Manager of the Camano Island Library Pilot Project, shared information, and best practices for marketing a library collection.   The Camano Island Library is a three year pilot project to test community interest in local library service.  The pilot project runs from 2007-2010.

Collections at the Camano Island and, Clinton libraries feature multiple copies of bestselling fiction and nonfiction titles.  The collections are refreshed regularly to provide a browsing experience for library customers that is similar to what one might find at a bookstore.    Titles at both libraries do not accept holds, so customers browsing the collection are able to find titles that would have long hold queues at other community libraries.

Contact Collection Development Manager, Nancy Messenger for more information regarding collection management at our popular materials libraries.
