library circulation = royalties?

February 2, 2009 · Leave a Comment

a somewhat dated post* from Smart Bitches alerted me to the fact that authors in the UK and Canada are paid out royalties for library circulation by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.  that seems unreal.  with the struggling publishing industry, i wonder what new and/or borrowed models will emerge.  definitely read the comments on Smart Bitches which provide additional info on how this all works and what some authors think of it.

*each day, i open yet another tab of interest for possible blog posting after further review.  it doesn’t take much for 20 tabs to build and i finally have to make the decision to delete or post, translating into some posts with links and info that are finally aged.

free to the first Sno-Isle staff member who comments, a copy of Jeff Kinney’s latest, “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw.”  perhaps you’ve heard of it?  ;)

it looks like another debut novel has taken off, Jamie Ford’s “Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet.”  being a debut novel with middle-of-the-road reviews at the time of purchase (one of which was a PW review calling the novel “a disappointing read”), i only bought 3 copies.  Pennie Ianniciello, Costco’s buyer, picked it for her February’s “Pennie’s Pick.  it’s a historical novel of race relations during World War II set in Seattle.

the author created videos, one describing the book:

and another providing a tour of some of the historical Seattle sites featured in the book:
