ESL DVDs coming soon

August 7, 2008 · 1 Comment

As we move towards removing analog materials of all types from community libraries, selectors are placing orders to ease this transition and fill shelves. Tuesday I placed a large order (374 dvds) for ESL DVDs at the Lynnwood, Mill Creek, Monroe, Mountlake Terrace, Mukilteo, and Snohomish libraries. English as a Second Language materials include a great deal of analog material which will be removed from the collection in the near future.

Tuesday’s order won’t replace piece for piece the material that will be removed but will go a long ways towards making the removal less dramatic.   ESL DVD are more expensive than other media because the market for these materials is limited, so production costs are greater.  Sno-Isle’s Strategic Plan should address ways to meet demand for ESL materials in the future.

Most of the titles I ordered are general ESL materials aimed at speakers of all languages, rather than the ESL for speakers of (blank) language.  I prefer the general ESL materials because it expands the usefulness of the entire collection.  Much of the analog material is of the ESL for speakers of (blank) language type, which means that though a great deal of shelf space is required to hold the material, only a small portion of it is useful for the majority of our customers.
