the connection between gaming and libraries

April 16, 2008 · 2 Comments

the Shifted Librarian posted a useful compilation of libraries using gaming as a bridge to literacy and publicizing the library in working with teens.  it’s especially useful since concrete and quantitative  examples are provided to add to the anecdotal evidence.  and it looks like there is more research to come.

Interesting article. I have been wondering the same thing… what do video games really have to do with the library. I am still not 100% convinced that we need to be spending money on guitar hero. Maybe we should move all the meeting rooms to the back of the library so that we can be sure that the teens know we also provided a free book sharing service?

The games are a way to get them in the library…just like children’s craft programs or flower arranging for adults. Once the teens are in the building, you can start to make that connection. I’ve never had a gaming event that didn’t evolve into booktalking or homework help.
